The smartphone photography bug has infected each and every one of us and everybody is well-aware of that. Including Sony, which has just announced that it will be introducing a new award dedicated to mobile photography as part of the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards.

The organizers of this major photographic competition say that the new category is here to recognize “how mobile photography has helped redefine the way in which photographers approach their art.”

Those interested in entering the contest can access the official webpage and submit three photos taken with a smartphone until February 27, 2015.

The images need to be relevant in the following context:

“You get out of life what you put in. Push past the obvious and see the inspiration all around you. Discover the extraordinary by using your mobile phone to view the world through different lens.”

The best 20 photographs will the picked by a select lineup of judges that includes Huffington Post’s director Anna Dickson and 500px co-founder Evgeny Techbotarev.

The 20 images will then be put on display on the World Photography Organization website from March 10 until March 17, when the public will be asked to vote and choose the winner.

The front runner will be invited to London to attend the awards gala ceremony that’s scheduled to take place in April 2015. He or she will be awarded a Sony Xperia smartphone and tablet.
