14 DAY TRIAL // It looks like Sony had a really good third fiscal quarter with sale that exceeded results from the same period in 2013. First of all, it’s clear that PlayStation 4 won the battle against Xbox One over the holiday season sales, at least according to the numbers.
Microsoft announced last month that it has shipped 6.6 million Xbox consoles combined, which includes both Xbox One and Xbox 360, but Sony has just reported it has managed to ship no less than 6.4 million PlayStation 4 during the third quarter of the fiscal year ending on December 31.
Since Microsoft’s numbers are combined, there is little to no chance that the Redmond-based company could’ve shipped more Xbox One consoles than Sony’s PlayStation 4 units.
On top of that, Sony also announced that it had also shipped 1.1 million PlayStation 3 consoles during the same timeframe, as well as 1.4 million portable consoles. The latter includes both PSP and PS Vita portable consoles.
Keep in mind that these numbers are tagged as “forecast” since Sony announced a while ago that it will postpone the financial results due to the Sony Pictures hack from last year.
Sony shipped a lot less PS3 consoles, but considerably more PS4 units
However, the Japanese company wanted to offer approximate numbers in early February, which should be accurate enough to give us an idea of how things worked out for Sony in the last quarter of last year.
The report published by Sony today highlights a decrease in PlayStation 3 sales, but a consistent increase in PlayStation 4 units shipped.
In comparison, Sony shipped only 4.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles in Q4 2013, 1.9 million less than what it managed to ship in Q4 2014. It’s also worth mentioning that PlayStation 3 sales dropped by 2.2 million year over year (YOY).
When it comes to games, Sony reports sales of more than 147 billion yen ($1.25 billion / €1.10 billion), a small YOY increase over 2013 (128 billion yen / $1.10 billion / €950M).
