As expected, Japanese handset maker Sony Mobile announced it kicked off the rollout of the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for some of the first Xperia Z smartphones.

Sony announced earlier this year plans to upgrade most of its Xperia Z smartphones to Android 5.0 Lollipop, as well as a few non-Xperia Z devices.

True to its promise, the company released Lollipop updates for all but the older Xperia Z smartphone in the last couple of months.

Today, Sony announced that Xperia Z and Xperia ZR owners can now download Android 5.0.2 Lollipop upgrade on their devices.

The update is pushed OTA (over the air) in stages, so it might take a while until it reaches all devices.

It's also worth mentioning that Xperia ZL and Xperia Tablet Z might be getting the update as well, XperiaBlog notes.

The Xperia ZL and Xperia Table Z should get the update too

In order to download the update, make sure your phone's battery is at least 50% charged and that you have enough storage space on your Xperia Z handset.

Speaking of which, Android 5.0.2 Lollipop for Xperia Z and Xperia ZR has about 700MB in size, but you will need to free about 1.2GB internal memory in order to install the update.

Aside from bringing the software version to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, the update brings some new features and improvements.

The official changelog mentions a fresh look and feel, based on Google Material Design, intelligent lock screen notifications and customizable settings.

In addition, multi-user profiles and guest mode have been implemented as well, along with storage optimization and the option to move apps to SD card.

Lots of bug fixes and under-the-hood improvements are part of the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop updates as well, but the list would be too long to mention in the changelog. Anyway, let's hope the update is as bug-free as possible and that no major issues are present in the update.
