The device is also on track to beat the PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 4 has had a very successful first year on the market and the team in charge of it at Sony is satisfied enough with the device to be thinking about its long-term future and how it might need to focus on various features in the coming years.

Andrew House, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment, is telling investors in his company that it is too early to compare the new platform with the PlayStation 2, but he is willing to admit that early indicators are very good at the moment and there are exciting possibilities opening up.

DualShockers quotes the executive as saying that “That being said, again in the spirit of taking a conservative and reasonable view of our business outlook, we are very conscious of the fact that in contrast to say, the PlayStation 2 lifecycle, consumers are now faced with a panoply of different choices and devices on which they can play games. We have to feel that that will have some impact on the life cycle overall.”

While the competition between the PlayStation 4 and the PS3 is a heated one, it seems clear to Sony that the new console will be an improvement over the PS3.

The PlayStation 4 is facing competition from the Xbox One

The PlayStation 4 is at the moment over the 13.5 million units sold worldwide mark and Sony will probably offer an update on the numbers after the Christmas period, when plenty of new customers are expected to pick up the console.

The company has not yet announced any intention to introduce a price cut, but it mentioned that one would be coming in 2015.

The rival Xbox One from Microsoft has cut its own price significantly since it was launched in November of last year, and at the moment gamers in the United States can pick one up for 349 dollars (235 Euro) for a time period which expires early next year.

The move has apparently had an impact and has increased sales for the device, but we will only have a clear picture of how important it was when the NPD Group numbers for November are released in about two weeks.

The Wii U might be seen as incapable of competing at the moment, but Nintendo has big hopes that the launch of Super Smash Bros. will make the platform a relevant one in time for Christmas.
