The trademark was abandoned due to an error

Sony has confirmed that The Last Guardian has not been abandoned, and that development of the project is still ongoing at its studios.

The Last Guardian was announced in 2009, and director Fumito Ueda has mentioned that his creative contribution to the project had been completed a long time ago, as Gamespot reports.

The last time we heard anything about the long-overdue project was in December last year, when Ueda mentioned that the game was still moving forward, only under some new conditions.

Sony has kept dodging questions related to the title ever since its announcement back in 2009, and it has opted not to make any reveals about it yet. Most likely, The Last Guardian kept all of its core design work but made the jump from the PlayStation 3 home console to the beefier PlayStation 4.

Following some pretty slow progress and even a reported reengineering, many gamers feared that the game would never take off, and that Sony would cancel it.

Even more speculation

The trademark for The Last Guardian was abandoned in the United States, but it appears that it was due to an administrative error, and not due to the fact that Sony scrapped the project.

The news just arrived a couple of days ago, and many members of the gaming community saw this as a signal of a potential shift of focus at Sony, or maybe the fact that the project would come out under a different name.

Sony has kept extending the game's trademark for a couple of years now, but it failed to do so following the United States Patent and Trademark Office's last notice, sent in July last year, and informing that the trademark needed to be extended.

In any case, the company has confirmed that Team Ico is still working on the title. Many gamers are eagerly awaiting more information related to the project, as Team Ico's previous video game, Shadow of the Colossus, was considered a veritable masterpiece, blending original and exciting gameplay mechanics with a strong narrative.
