Gamers can choose what content they want to see

The team at Microsoft in charge of the Xbox One home console announces that the Sling TV app is now live on the platform, which means that gamers will be able to get access to a variety of television content for 20 dollars a month (18 Euro) as long as they live in the United States.

The entire solution is designed to deliver the best programs that the various channels now offer without forcing users to get a complex cable package.

The company is also saying that those who pick up a new Xbox One home console will get a 90-day-long trial period during which they can use Sling TV without paying, while the testing for other users will last 30 days.

The new app can be snapped or pinned as any other and it can also be controlled by users via the Kinect motion tracking system for the Microsoft platform.

Roger Lynch, the chief executive officer of the company working on Sling TV, explains that "For many millennials, Xbox One is already the center of their living room experience, and we want to reach these fans to show there’s a better way to get live TV that doesn’t require a long-term commitment, high programming costs, additional wires or hidden fees."

It's unclear whether the Sling TV app is exclusive to the Xbox One or if there are plans to also introduce it on the PlayStation 4 at some point in the future.

Sony and Microsoft need apps to make their devices attractive

Since both the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 were announced, the two companies talked about the way apps could add extra value to the platforms.

At the moment, rumors are suggesting that Microsoft is getting ready to move to an open application environment for its device at some point in November, which would mean that companies will be free to deliver new apps with limited oversight.

A Software Development Kit is expected to arrive in late May alongside an official announcement.

It seems that Sony does not have any plans to do something similar for the PlayStation 4 and that might mean that the console will have a smaller number of apps launching in the final months of the year.
