U2 cancels The Tonight Show week-long residency

Bad news for U2's frontman, Bono, as it has been reported that he was left unable to play after a “bizarre” cycling accident that hurt his arm. It seems that the rocker was cycling in New York City's Central Park when he suffered a fall that badly injured his arm. It has been confirmed that he will need surgery.

The band's website commented on the incident over the weekend, addressing The Tonight Show residency that was supposed to take place this week. The band agreed to stay with Jimmy Fallon for a whole week, acting as his in-house band, most likely in a bid to ramp up ratings.

U2 promises they will do The Tonight Show residency some other time

“It looks like we will have to do our ‘Tonight Show’ residency another time — we’re one man down,” said the statement and then it explained that “Bono has injured his arm in a cycling spill in Central Park and requires some surgery to repair it. We’re sure he’ll make a full recovery soon, so we’ll be back!”

The band was also careful to give props to Fallon and his team who were left hanging after this incident, “Much thanks to [The Tonight Show host] Jimmy Fallon and everyone at the show for their understanding.”

Bono was also involved in a minor plane accident last week

There were no details of the crash on the site, but if it requires surgery, it has to be pretty serious, and it's sure that it will put Bono out of commission for a long time. For Bono, it was definitely not a good week, as last Wednesday it was reported that the plane he was traveling on from Dublin to Berlin lost one of its hatches in mid-flight.

The plane also had on board four other passengers and the two pilots, but no one noticed the door came off the plane until they landed, approximately 11 minutes after it was ripped from the plane in mid-flight. The plane was Bono's own private jet, a multimillion Learjet 60 D-CGEO that was taking Bono and some of his friends to the Bambi International Music Awards on November 12.

This new accident leaves Fallon in a bit of a pickle, as he had massively promoted U2's participation with his show all of last week, and even organized a YouTube “lip sync” contest for fans who wanted to sing the band's new song, “The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone),” live with the band on set. It seems he will have to make other plans, and fast.
