2K Games, the publisher of Sid Meier's Civilization V, is now letting people play this game for free until October 23, so you don't have too long to give it a try.

Sid Meier's Civilization V is without a doubt the most successful game in the history of the Civilization franchise, and its makers and publishers know this very well. Letting people play for free, even just for a short while, is like enabling a bad habit. The game is addictive beyond imagination and it's almost certain that the sales for it will spike after the free period is over.

This is a very strange game, because players will be able to finish it well before this free trial ends, but they will have experienced just a fraction of what this title has to offer.

If you start a game with a faster turn speed, you might be able to finish it in a few hours, but that is not the point. The fact that the maps, enemies, and encounters are randomized turns every experience into a unique adventure, which makes the replayability of Sid Meier's Civilization V go through the roof.

You can't close Sid Meier's Civilization V after you've started it

Sid Meier's Civilization V is now the fifth most played game on Steam, and if you don't think that means a lot, then you must know that it was initially released back in 2010. How many games from 2010 are still played by millions of players each month? Not many.

"Become Ruler of the World by establishing and leading a civilization from the dawn of man into the space age: Wage war, conduct diplomacy, discover new technologies, go head-to-head with some of history's greatest leaders and build the most powerful empire the world has ever known."

"Jump right in and play at your own pace with an intuitive interface that eases new players into the game. Civ veterans will appreciate the depth, detail and control that are highlights of the series. City States become a new resource in your diplomatic battleground. An improved diplomacy system allows you to negotiate with fully interactive leaders. Custom music scores and orchestral recordings give Civ V the level of polish and quality you expect from the series," reads the Steam entry.

The Linux version of the game has been available only for a couple of months, but there already are many fans. As if the game was not big enough on its own, there are also a ton of DLCs for it, ranging from full-blown add-ons to smaller packs.

So, if you want to give it a try, you still have until tomorrow. Keep in mind that Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth launches on Friday, October 24, so you can say this is just a taste of what's to come.
