It seems that 2016 will be the era of 4K phones

Not so long ago, word surfaced that Samsung might be looking to add to its upcoming Galaxy Note 5 an advanced 4K display (2,160 x 3,840 pixel resolution) with a record 748ppi pixel density.

The current industry standard is for flagships to boast 2K displays, but their advent has been quite controversial. The question arises whether there’s a point offering such high pixel density if the human eye can’t distinguish over 300ppi?

Probably not, but manufacturers love having what to brag about and a 4K smartphone would certainly draw some much needed attention.

Sharp is paving the way for the upcoming smartphone era

This week, we’re getting one step closer to seeing such a smartphone make a debut into the wild, as Sharp has just announced the world’s first 5.5-inch mobile display with UHD resolution (as seen at Tech Blog).

The panel will go into mass production in 2016, and interestingly enough, Sharp has announced the display with even more than what was previously anticipated - an impressive 806ppi.

This announcement shouldn’t surprise us too much given the fact that this is where the industry is headed anyway. Not so long ago, LG announced in a press release that it was in the process of building an 8K display for Apple’s future iMac product, a piece of information which currently remains unconfirmed.

4K displays on mobile devices have been scarce so far, but not completely absent. Remember that Panasonic had a 20-inch rugged tablet that enjoyed the benefits of such a panel.

The slob sold for a hefty price and was aimed at professionals, but soon everyone will be able to enjoy the perks of a 4K mobile device.

Having 4K in your pocket might prove useful

More and more 4K-ready cameras are being released every day, but the downside of this situation is that users shooting in this format don’t have devices on which to view their content. But with 4K smartphones becoming a standard, this will finally change.

On the other hand, we can see 4K displays play an important part in virtual reality. With a 4K phone on board, a VR headset could deliver a more accurate experience, as enhanced pixel density removes the screen-door effect.

So are you ready for a new era for smartphones?
