Samsung is mostly present at mid-range and top-tier, but the J series has been specifically developed for emerging markets where price matters most.

The Galaxy J1 is one of the cheapest Android smartphones available on the market, but also one of the low-specced, as Samsung stripped down everything that could increase the price.

The smartphone was announced back in January and made it to the market one month later, which offered Samsung enough time to assess its potential.

Well, it looks like Samsung Galaxy J1 was/is popular enough that the South Korean company plans to launch a sequel or a slightly improved version.

The folks over at SamMobile have learned that Samsung is readying a new smartphone in the J series, which will be released soon as Galaxy J1 Pop.

Since it almost has the same name as the Galaxy J1, this is likely to be a different version aimed at another type of consumers.

A new smartphone in the J series or a variation of Galaxy J1?

Unfortunately, no details on Galaxy J1 Pop have been leaked yet, but the cited source claims the smartphone will be initially launched in Brazil, Russia and India, soon followed by a global rollout.

If Samsung plans to launch an improved version of the Galaxy J1, then let's see what the original model has to offer in terms of specs.

First of all, the Galaxy J1 is powered by Android 4.4.4 KitKat and packs a low-end 1.2GHz dual-core Spreadtrum processor, which is complemented by 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory.

It also comes with microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 128GB), and a 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen display that supports 480 x 800 pixels resolution.

Samsung also included 3G connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, 5-megapixel main camera, 2-megapixel secondary photo snapper, GPS with AGPS, FM Radio and a 1850 mAh battery.

Let's hope that the Galaxy J1 Pop will at least feature more RAM and a slightly more powerful processor. Stay tuned for more on this one.
