Samsung’s previous metal handset had weak signal

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is coming our way in just a few days, and while we’re waiting on the big event, more and more details about the upcoming device are becoming available to us.

The Galaxy S6 is expected to be the answer to every Samsung fan’s prayer over the years. With its latest flagship, the Korean tech giant will finally show it has been listening to what customers have been saying all along – plastic feels cheap on a flagship.

So for the first time ever while its S lineup is concerned, Samsung will be making its top-tier phone out of metal. While this is good news for premium device enthusiasts, the change in how Samsung usually goes about things might pose a problem or two.

For example, according to a report coming out of Korean media, Samsung will have to use a new type of antenna in order to prevent eventual interferences from the metal chasing.

The antenna tech inside the flagship will mark a change

The Galaxy S6 is said to be built entirely out of aluminum and will have glass cover at the front and back, so the antenna needs to be built taking this aspect into consideration so that its signal will be able to pass through the metal parts.

As the report claims, Samsung will stop using the Laser Direct Structuring (LDS) antenna and take up the flexible PCB (FPCB) type. The antenna will be fixed in sections where internal radios for cellular or NFC will be stationed.

You might remember that back in 2014, it was reported that owners of metal Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 complained of weak signal, a by-product of Samsung using a metal chassis on the phones. To add even more salt on the wound, the two metal handsets were shown to fare much worse than the plastic Galaxy S6.

So hopefully with the new antenna technology, Samsung will be able to resolve these issues and ship out a flagship with robust signal.

The Galaxy S6 is expected to be unleashed on March 1 in Barcelona. The handset will take advantage of a 5.1-inch display with QHD resolution and won’t rely on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chip, but on Sammy’s Exynos 7420 chip instead.

The Galaxy S6 Edge has also been confirmed and will be probably come equipped with the same antenna technology.
