While most of this year’s flagship smartphones will be making a debut into the wild with a QHD display, it appears the industry is slowly orienting itself towards a new standard.

A while back, Samsung confirmed via its Analyst Days presentation slides that it had an Ultra HD (2,160 x 3,840 pixel resolution) Super AMOLED display for mobile devices in the works. Now, it looks like we’re going to see such panels make a debut into real-life products sooner than we might have expected.

The folks at Phone Arena have received a new tip revealing that good old Sammy is planning to implement a UHD Super AMOLED panel in the upcoming Galaxy Note 5.

The company is poised to start mass display production in August, which sounds just about right given the fact that Samsung usually announces Note products during the IFA trade show in Berlin, which takes place in September.

More scoop about the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 gets revealed

Apart from that, it appears that Samsung will continue the tradition and will launch an “edge” variant of the Note 5, which is expected to make a debut with a 5.78-inch diagonal. The regular version will feature a 5.89-inch display.

This means the two phones will arrive on the market with 762ppi and 748ppi pixel density, respectively, which is by far the highest we have seen in any smartphone so far. But will it be of any use?

When discussing QHD displays, we kept telling you that the human eye finds it difficult to distinguish what comes over 300ppi, so is there an actual point to 762ppi?

We also argued that QHD put a big toll on battery life, which tends to drain a lot faster, so can you image what a UHD display would do to a flagship? Samsung must have figured out a way to stop the phone from running out of juice in just a few hours.

Sticking to the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 5, it appears the phablet will continue the pattern established by the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, meaning that it will probably rely on an in-house Exynos chip produced by Sammy itself.

Word on the street has it that the phone maker is looking to introduce a single-chip solution with models destined for the premium market, set to arrive in the fourth quarter of the year.
