Microsoft and Samsung have just kicked off the rollout of the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 for the ATIV S. The update is now being deployed internationally to all compatible Samsung ATIV S units.

Polish blog site WindowsMania reports that Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 is only available for Samsung ATIV S devices that haven’t been registered into the Preview for Developers program.

The update is not available for ATIV S units in the Preview for Developers program

It looks like those who did install the Developer Preview of Windows Phone on their Samsung ATIV S units will have to wait a little longer to get the Update 1 on the smartphone.

Curiously, Samsung ATIV S is the second smartphone that receives Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1, the first being Nokia Lumia 930. Other smartphones recently announced by Microsoft come with the new version of the operating system out of the box, namely Nokia Lumia 730 and Lumia 830.

We kind of expected that at least a few more Nokia Lumia smartphones would begin receiveing Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 before other brands get it.

However, it looks like Samsung moved fast and managed to convince Microsoft that ATIV S owners should get the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 on their devices as soon as possible.

Speaking of which, Samsung ATIV S owners who have yet to receive the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 may want to know what to expect in terms of new features and improvements before installing the update.

New features and improvements in Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1

First of all, Samsung ATIV S will finally receive the option to manage folders on the Start screen. Users will only need to push one Tile on top of another to create a brand new folder.

The new Apps Corners is another new feature that allows users to specify which applications certain people can access on the Samsung ATIV S.

The update should also bring L2TP support for VPN, so that users can connect to more VPN services, either for work or personal use.

Various tweaks have been included as well, such as the new and improved selection, which will allow users to delete multiple calls, messages or even contacts with one touch of a button.

Internet sharing is another improvement that Samsung ATIV S users will be able to take advantage of, thus allowing them to share their cellular data connection over Bluetooth, so they can get Internet on multiple devices.

There are a lot more new features and improvements in the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 for Samsung ATIV S, so make sure you manually check for the update in case you don’t get notified.
