Developers Digital Extremes and n-Space have released a brand new gameplay video from the upcoming Sword Coast Legends, giving us a glimpse of what the game will be about and how it will work.

The video offers a pretty revealing look at the game’s systems and at various in-game interactions, including adventuring, combat, complete with handy developer commentary.

Sword Coast Legends is a brand new role-playing game fashioned in the style of Baldur’s Gate, using the Dungeons & Dragons setting and rules, offering an experience similar to the one the acclaimed tabletop game provides.

The isometric, party-based role-playing game is heavy on lore and personality but follows an old-school design paradigm, trying to answer the question of what the Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale series would have become, should they have continued.

However, Sword Coast Legends aims to also please more demanding gamers, using full 3D visuals and a ton of special effects, also offering a pleasing visual experience, while also affording the user full control over the camera.

An intriguing mix of old and new stuff

The game’s combat system is similar to the one in BioWare’s classic RPGs, allowing players to pause the game and issue orders in the heat of battle, in order to present a strategic challenge.

One thing that classic D&D fans might have an issue with though is the fact that the characters’ abilities use a cooldown system, similar to the one most massively multiplayer online role-playing games use, instead of going for the usual daily limit system.

The video looks pretty exciting, but it only shows the pedestrian single-player mode. Sword Coast Legends’ main draw is the beefy multiplayer module that enables one user to step into the role of Dungeon Master and to craft an adventure for their friends to enjoy or die trying to complete.

The Dungeon Master multiplayer mode will enable players to affect the game in real-time, in a way that has never been exploited before in video games, by adjusting encounters, placing and even controlling monsters, rewarding or punishing party members, and so on and so forth.
