SuperX 3.0 Beta, an operating system that is highly modular, flexible, and that comes with a customized KDE desktop aimed at all user categories, is now available for download and testing.

Not too many people have heard about SuperX, but that is only because the developers don't make releases often. In fact, the previous iteration of SuperX arrived all the way back in October 2013, so it's been more than a year since then. From the looks of it, the makers of this distro used the time to make some important changes, to add new applications, and to change the overall feel and functionality of the system.

SuperX was based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, but that has changed now and the devs have used Debian instead. The desktop experience has been customized tremendously and it provides users with a clear and nice interface that is unique for this Linux distro. KDE has been used and it really shows, especially since one of the developer's goals is to have this Linux OS replace Windows.

SuperX 3.0 Beta is a nice KDE surprise

Developers don't usually go through all the trouble of customizing the KDE desktop, but SuperX is an exception. The result is a different kind of Linux desktop that is perfectly capable of catering to the needs of potential Windows users, without ignoring the existing Linux users.

"It features a highly customized KDE 4 desktop, a dark plasma theme and some great aesthetic tweaks, Under the hood, it is the same Linux desktop, with all goodness of KDE and Qt. The developers have said that, they are ‘KDE and Qt-Centric but not GTK free’, so you will find some GTK application and tools here and there. They have adopted some of Linux Mint’s tools and integrated them, like integrating superx-sources."

"In the year of 2013, the State Government of Assam (for those who don’t know, Assam is a state in north-eastern part of India) distributed 29, 887 laptop computers to meritorious high-school passed students and SuperX was the default OS of choice. This might be one of the large OEM-shipment of KDE desktop ever," said one of the devs on this blog.

A complete list of changes and new features can be found in the announcement. You can download SuperX 3.0 Beta right now from Softpedia. Please keep in mind that this is still in development, so it's likely you're also going to find bugs or any other problems.
