Video game publisher Nintendo announces that it has managed to sell 490,000 copies of its recently launched Super Smash Bros. Wii U in the United States, which makes the title the fastest selling experience for the home console ever, overtaking another high-profile game, Mario Kart 8.

The information comes from internal figures obtained by the company and offers both physical and digital copies, although no details were offered on the split in percentages between the two.

The 490,000 copies figure for Super Smash Bros. Wii U was generated between November 21 and November 23.

Gamesindustry.biz quotes Scott Moffit, a representative of Nintendo of America, as stating that "The Nintendo holiday is off to a great start, but there's a lot of work left to do and a few more surprises in store for our fans. With great deals coming on Black Friday and Cyber Monday and great content like Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker launching next week, Nintendo will offer shoppers the best combination of fun and value this holiday season."

Super Smash Bros. Wii U is one of the video games that is designed to appeal to a large number of players and to deliver a set of familiar mechanics that have over time managed to attract a wide audience.

Wii U can challenge the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 during the Christmas period

The solid launch sales for Super Smash Bros. Wii U are clearly great news for Nintendo and the company is highlighting them in order to show that its home console can generate hits and can be a solid competitor to the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.

If the new title continues to deliver solid sales in the coming weeks, the company will push it as Christmas approaches and will also aim to clearly associate it with its device.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U introduces a wide range of familiar characters taken from Nintendo franchises, and developers have said that the mechanics have been tweaked in order to make the entire experience more accessible.

It is also the first video game that is entirely compatible with the new Amiibo figurines, which should also be a hot item during the Christmas period and are designed to introduce a new dimension to the core mechanics.

Gamers also have the options to create their own playable character based on their Mii avatar, complete with fully customizable sets of powers.
