That doesn't mean, however, that someone else won't step up

The creator of the Smash Bros series, Masahiro Sakurai, says that he won't make any more such games.

That, however, doesn't mean that no further entries in the series will ever be made, just that he won't be a part of the creative process behind them.

In other words, Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Wii U is the last game in the franchise to have been touched by Sakurai, the prime driving force behind the series.

In an interview with GameInformer, Sakurai revealed that, when he made both Melee and Brawl, he created the games thinking that there wouldn't be any more sequels, which means that there is still hope for the future.

He just said that he didn't picture himself making another game. This decision is largely due to the scope of the games and the immense toll they took on him, when facing the constant pressure to please the community and innovate continuously.

The developer said that he did it to himself, by being too bold and attempting to do too much with every game, and that it felt like a noose tightening around his neck.

It's hard to innovate time and time again

"Our intention [with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U] was to provide extra merits to the game which go far beyond the sale price. In terms of scope, and in terms of sheer number of characters, we went beyond our limits long ago. And yet, if we cut the number of fighters or modes in a future game, I'm sure there would be complaints," Sakurai stated.

He said that there had been a tremendous effort in the past to stretch out and keep pushing the boundaries of the game, and that it was getting increasingly difficult to please gamers and give them what the developers want, a better and better experience with each iteration.

"That may seem like it contradicts my personal desire to keep giving gamers as much as I can, but I don't see any easy answer for it. And yet, despite that, I also have trouble picturing someone else taking my place and providing all this value-added content without me," Sakurai concluded.

Super Smash Bros was a huge hit on the Nintendo 3DS, selling like hot cakes, and it's also generating a lot of interest in the Nintendo Wii U platform right now, having just been released in Europe and North America. The fighting game is coming out in Japan on December 6, where Nintendo's products are the most popular, and will most likely prove one of the most popular on the console, just like Mario Kart 8 did back in May.
