The development team at Insomniac Games and publisher Microsoft announce that they are offering the recently launched Sunset Overdrive for free to all those who subscribe to the Xbox Live Gold service and own an Xbox One home console for the weekend, giving them a chance to see the mechanics of the shooter in action.

The open access period will start at 12:01 Eastern Time on Saturday, November 22 and will last 24 hours, with the game being offered with all core mechanics enabled.

Gamers can earn Achievements and the progress that they make will be saved and can be transferred to a bought version of Sunset Overdrive at any point in the future.

The official announcement on the Major Nelson blog states, “Sunset Overdrive’s 8-player cooperative multiplayer experience, Chaos Squad, will also be available for everyone tomorrow. Please note: Chaos Squad must be unlocked by playing a certain amount into the campaign.”

The company also says that the Insomniac Games team will show off some new weapons that will be added to the shooter on their official Twitch channel on Monday, November 24 at 10 AM Pacific Time.

The Xbox One needs all the advantages it can get

It’s unclear whether Microsoft is offering Sunset Overdrive for free for 24 hours because the title has failed to generate the sales that were expected from it or if the company is simply aiming to once again boost sales of the Xbox One.

The game has solid mechanics and was well received by the community and it seems that Insomniac Games has plans to support it in the long term with new weapons and maybe game modes.

Meanwhile Microsoft is suggesting that its price cut on November 2 has solid results and is allowing the Xbox One to catch up in terms of current sales to the PlayStation 4.

The Sony device is at the moment still in the lead when the entire lifetime of the hardware generation is taken into account with more than 13.5 million units sold to 10 million.

The Xbox One currently sells for 349 dollars in North America and 399 Euro in Europe, and on Black Friday the company is allowing gamers to pick it up for an even lower price with Assassin’s Creed Unity and another free game bundled.

The state of the competition between devices will be clearer once the NPD Group releases its sales numbers for the month of November.
