14 DAY TRIAL // Two teenagers from Romania have been arrested this morning after defacing the websites of multiple police departments in the country since September until October.
Aged 17 and 18, the duo managed to compromise the servers of 20 law enforcement organizations, as well as that of the General Inspectorate of Romanian Police (IGPR).
Two months ago, on September 18, they left a message on the main page of the IGPR website, claiming to be part of the Romanian branch of Anonymous hacker collective.
“Greetings gentlemen. We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We are THE ROMANIAN PEOPLE or, of course, ‘ciumpalacii.’ Wake up, Romania!,” read the message.
The “greeting” was taken down, but an investigation of the attack was started.
The servers did not contain information regarding police investigations, but were used for hosting the organizations’ websites and contained public information.
Anyone accessing the webpage that day saw that the unauthorized individuals managed to penetrate the police computer systems.
According to the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), which coordinated the raids, one of the teenagers is indeed part of the Anonymous community in Romania.
The two hackers, one from Galati and the other from Bucharest, are now being investigated for illegal computer access and altering of computer data integrity. Depending on the charges brought against them after the investigation, the maximum sentence they face as per the Romanian legislation is seven years in prison. However, they could also get away with as little as a few months behind bars.
