The names seem to suggest a new game announcement

The developers at Harmonix in charge of the Rock Band franchise are announcing that they are introducing new downloadable content for the title, allowing fans to get access to two new songs which are perfectly chosen to suggest that a big announcement about a new title is coming soon.

The included tracks are Rize of the Fenix from Tenacious D and Back to the Shack from Weezer, and gamers can pick them up for the price of 1.99 dollars or 1.49 Euro each.

The announcement states, "Tenacious D’s Rize Of The Fenix, from the 2012 record of the same name, will get you rocking again on February 17th. Joining The D classic will be Back To The Shack a single from Weezer’s latest record, Everything Will Be Alright in the End."

The two songs are offered on the PlayStation Network for the PS3 and on the Xbox Live Store for the Xbox 360.

The language used by Harmonix in its announcement might be neutral, but the titles of the songs chosen for the new DLC seem to suggest that the company is getting back to active work on the Rock Band franchise.

This might mean than an entirely new title is being created for the Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony, or it might be a sign that more downloadable content will arrive in the coming weeks.

It could also be an elaborate joke played on the Rock Band community by Harmonix.

The music game series has more than 3,500 tracks offered from 1,400 artists and this new breath of content alone makes it a good candidate for a new installment.

As always, fans are free to request other tracks that should be added to Rock Band, although there's no guarantee that their favorite songs can be licensed and then turned into DLC.

Rock Band could be huge on new consoles

The music game genre was at one point huge and created solid revenue on the Xbox 360 and the PS3, but market saturation and lack of innovation meant that both Rock Band and the rival Guitar Hero series slowly declined until they were quietly abandoned.

A new generation of gamers playing on new platforms would represent a very good opportunity for Harmonix and Activision to revive those brands.

The studio is at the moment also working on Amplitude and Chroma.
