Perhaps more surprising than the fact that the “Thor” film franchise turned leading man Chris Hemsworth into the hottest hottie in Hollywood was the fact that Loki, his villainous brother played by Tom Hiddleston, earned such a solid following after the 2 movies that fans are actually clamoring that he gets his own standalone pic.

No joke: right after the release of “The Dark World,” the second installment, there were several online campaigns meant to convince Marvel that Loki deserved his own film, because the fans wanted it.

And because he had done such an amazing job in that one, of course: Hiddleston dominated every scene he was in, to the point where most of the movie played out like it was all about Loki, and not Thor.

Loki’s coming back in 2017

Though the ending of “Dark World” hinted that there would be more of Loki in future “Thor” installments, until now, Marvel has kept very mum on the topic. The same goes for Hiddleston, who only expressed his wish of being asked back, refusing to say if anyone had actually reached out to him with an offer.

But Marvel is not dumb to toss away a good opportunity when they see one, especially with so many fans being vocal online about their adoration of all things Loki. So yes, the character would return in the third “Thor” movie, Marvel Studios President Kevin Fiege said at a Marvel event held at the El Capitan theater in Hollywood.

“Thor: Ragnarok” will be out on July 28, 2017 and will see the two brothers Thor and Loki (half-brothers, to be more exact) join forces again to save Asgard. CinemaBlend reports that the events in “Ragnarok” will pick up right after “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015), which means that, by the end of it, Thor would have figured out what Loki did at the end of “Dark World.”

Spoiler territory, tread carefully

In the closing scene in “Thor: The Dark World,” Loki takes on his father’s appearance to trick Thor into leaving the kingdom of Asgar and return to Earth in search of his one true love. Before it all fades to black, he transforms back into Loki and is leering into the camera: he’s finally gotten what he always wanted, to be the king of Asgard.

The aforementioned trade publication speculates that Thor will return to Asgard once he realizes what Loki did, which is also when the Ragnarok takes place. By that time, the people of Asgard will have been under Loki’s reign for quite some time.

Ragnarok is “the prophesized apocalyptic battle that is foretold to result in the complete destruction of Asgard,” and it’s Loki who will put all the wheels in motion for it. As such, it falls on Thor to stop him, and if he’s to keep his word, this time he will stop him from doing evil for all eternity.

Also on this topic, Feige said that the title of the film, “Thor: Ragnarok,” “will have an effect on the Marvel Cinematic Universe as big as what Captain America: The Winter Soldier was able to pull off.”
