Double Damage Games announces Rebel Galaxy, an action-adventure space opera with lots of shooting, trading and futuristic swashbuckling.

The recently formed studio gathers a lot of talent, and with former Diablo 2 and Torchlight developers (the ex-founders of Runic Entertainment) on board, you know that something good is coming our way.

"Since the announcement of our studio we've been hard at work building Rebel Galaxy, and we're excited to finally unveil it. This has been a game we've wanted to make for a long time, and we look forward to sharing more details with players as development continues," said Travis Baldree, co-founder of Double Damage Games.

The science fiction role-playing game will put you in the shoes of the brave captain of a huge ship staffed by hundreds of non-playable characters, flying around space through randomly generated galaxies.

Become Captain Hook or Space Nelson Mandela

You'll engage in massive battles, working with or against various factions that you encounter, and carve your own path through the universe.

You'll be able to customize your ship weapons, shield, engines and secondary systems in order to make the best of any situation, and if space combat is of no interest to you, you can always try the route of diplomacy.

Conversations with different characters will have dialogue trees with various consequences, enabling you to craft a unique story as you progress through the game.

Your journey will end with a final boss encounter, but you'll still be able to roam the galaxy and find new adventures afterwards.

Keeping in line with Diablo and Torchlight, Rebel Galaxy will also feature a randomly generated loot system.

The game's debut trailer shows some gameplay footage, and it seems to be a story-driven adventure that features a ton of space combat, if you make the wrong (or right, depending on your inclination) choices.

The game has a strong roguish vibe

There's a distinct western vibe that makes one think of Firefly. The developers are touting pirates to fight, anomalies to explore, aliens to befriend or, well, alienate, asteroids to mine, starship scraps to scavenge and artifacts to discover.

You'll be able to choose your own path and elect whether you embark on a picaresque role or whether you'll be the goody two-shoes that always stands on the side of justice. Or you can become a space trader and peacefully make your way across the galaxy. Or become a warmongering pirate and carve your way through it leaving a trail of bodies in your wake.

Rebel Galaxy is expected on PC and PlayStation 4, sometime in 2015. If you want to learn more about the upcoming game, feel free to visit the official Rebel Galaxy website.
