Raspbian is a Linux distribution based on Debian built specifically for the Raspberry Pi platform. Developers have just implemented a huge update to it, and it's now available for download and upgrade.

The Raspbian distro is one of the oldest operating systems with support for Raspberry Pi, and it was also the first OS that provided support for the second generation of the mini PCs. It provides a classic desktop experience, and most users will be able to just pick it up and get things done without any problems. The desktop environment follows a classic design, and even Windows users will see some resemblance.

It's been a long while since Raspbian was properly updated. It was still using a rather old desktop, although all the other components were up to date. Now, developers have made some serious improvements and users will immediately spot the changes.

The fact that Raspbian is based on Debian means that users also have access to all the Debian repos and apps. However, it's not necessarily an operating system that is better than anything else.

"Hopefully the dust has now settled on the first batch of changes to the Raspbian desktop which were made available at Christmas, and you've either a) decided you like them, or b) decided you hate them and have rolled back to a previous version, never to upgrade again. The next set of desktop changes are now available. The overall look and feel hasn't changed, but there have been a few major new features added, and a lot of small tweaks and bug fixes," reads the official announcement.

According to the changelog, a new Wi-fi interface has been implemented, a new volume / audio interface has been added, the appearance settings have been upgraded, and a ton of other things have been added.

You can download Raspbian from Softpedia and upgrade it to the latest version.
