Ryan Gosling has hinted that he would never do a big budget movie franchise: he simply does not do sequels. His resume so far is proof that he’ll only work on projects he believes in, not those that pay the biggest salary. If all goes well, he may come very close to starring in a big budget studio franchise, Slash Film reports.

Alcon Entertainment, now working on “Blade Runner 2,” the sequel to the cult classic starring Harrison Ford (1982), announced that Gosling was in talks for a role opposite Ford, who is reprising the role from the original.

As these things go, whenever a studio comes out with a sequel for a movie that’s older than the target demographic of the new one, the old lead is there mostly for nostalgia reasons, while the younger star is meant to be the actual lead and the one who is expected to carry the franchise forward, to box office glory.

In other words, if Gosling accepts the offer, he may have to sign a multi-picture deal that would bind him to a third and even fourth movie. These days, most studios know that the big money is in tentopole franchises, and “Blade Runner” could be turned into one.

Whether Gosling accepts the role or not, “Blade Runner 2” starts shooting this summer, under the direction of Denis Villeneuve (“Prisoners,” “Enemy”), off a script by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green.

Ridley Scott, who directed the original, will serve as executive producer. “Blade Runner,” the original is based on the Philip K. Dick novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”
