The new cooperative survival shooter is looking good

The original Killing Floor started out as a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004, and in 2009, developer Tripwire Interactive brought forth a standalone experience that delighted millions of fans across multiplayer platforms.

Now, after a pretty long time, a sequel is finally available, launching first as a Steam Early Access title so that fans can impact its development ahead of the actual release later this year.

The Steam Early Access version of Killing Floor 2 launches on April 21, but we've managed to participate in a special beta and are able to share some interesting details about the cooperative first-person shooter, not to mention a gameplay video and some screenshots.

Does the new title manage to continue the legacy of its popular predecessor or should the Zeds devour it? Let's have a quick look.

Killing Floor 2 looks great both in terms of gameplay and visuals

Straight from the get-go you notice that Killing Floor 2 has been drastically improved in terms of visuals. While the title still uses the now quite old Unreal Engine 3 technology, it's been overhauled by Tripwire to ensure great graphics, fantastic effects, and of course, rock solid performance so that nothing stands between players and the monsters that want to kill them.

In terms of gameplay, Killing Floor 2 boasts the same cooperative first-person shooter survival mechanics. Up to six players can work together to banish waves of monsters, and then face off against a deadly boss enemy.

In the beta, only a few levels and classes were available, but even so Killing Floor 2 is looking mighty impressive. The Paris map in particular not only looks gorgeous but also features sprawling aboveground and underground sections.

Monsters are fierce and varied

The actual monsters are much more varied this time around, featuring not just the regular Zeds or the crawling ones but also new characters, such as a Banshee that, through her eerie scream, doesn't allow you to use grenades.

The boss character present in the beta is, of course, quite formidable and only cooperation and precise timing will result in victory for the survivors.

This time around, players can progress through 25 levels, and every 5 levels, they can pick a new perk for that specific class. Some great choices are present and you can re-spec them whenever you want.

So far, Killing Floor 2 is looking like a very impressive cooperative survival shooter. Once it enters Early Access later this month, Tripwire wants to hear feedback from fans and change the game in different ways ahead of its full release.
