Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH proudly announced on February 19, 2015, the immediate availability of version 3.4 of its powerful, open-source, and reliable server virtualization management computer operating system, Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE). The release brings a number of new features and improvements, including NUMA support (non-uniform memory access), ZFS storage plug-in, hotplug support, as well as the latest and greatest ZFS file system.

Proxmox VE (Virtual Environment) 3.4 is based on latest Debian GNU/Linux 7.8 (Wheezy) operating system, which means that it includes its base packages and Linux kernel. The GUI (Graphical User Interface) saw numerous improvements requested by users, such as the ability to start and stop all virtual machines, support for migrating all virtual machines, as well as support for disconnecting virtual network cards.

“ZFS in Proxmox VE 3.4 is absolutely powerful. Users can replace cost intense hardware raid cards by moderate CPU and memory load, and it’s combined with easy management.” Maurer summarizes “By using ZFS, our users can achieve maximum enterprise features with low budget hardware – but they should not forget to add a SSD for a fast cache (L2ARC and ZIL),“ says Martin Maurer, CEO of Proxmox Server Solutions.

It integrates the ZFS (OpenZFS) open-source filesystem and logical volume manager

The all-in-one ZFS (OpenZFS) open-source filesystem and logical volume manager (LVM) has been integrated in Proxmox VE (Virtual Environment) 3.4, providing support for storing a huge amount of data. The installer has been greatly improved in this release, allowing users to select a root filesystem (EXT3, EXT4 or ZFS) and all ZFS RAID levels during the installation. The ZFS filesystem is also capable of supporting KVM images in raw format via the new plugin.

Last but not least, the new hot plug-in feature lets users install and replace virtual disks, USB devices and network cards in real time. Regular users who want to try the operating system can download Proxmox VE (Virtual Environment) 3.4 right now via Softpedia, where it is distributed as an installable-only ISO image. On the other hand, enterprise customers can get a subscription for as low as 59.90 euros per year and CPU socket from the project’s official website.
