Sony has revealed that its PlayStation Plus subscription service has just reached 7.9 million members worldwide, continuing its healthy growth in the console sector.

For the time being, it's unclear how many of the 7.9 million subscribers are PlayStation 4 owners, but the company's Chief Executive Officer Kaz Hirai mentioned earlier this year that close to half of all the new home console's adopters also maintained a PS Plus subscription.

Back then, Sony had shipped close to 7 million PlayStation 4 units, and things have been going really well, as the company revealed last month that the number of PS4 consoles that found a home had surpassed 13.5 million.

The latest information comes from the corporation's latest post-earnings conference call, where Sony executives have confirmed that the PS Plus service has reached the impressive number of subscribers, as reported by GamesIndustry.

The service is useful for many different reasons, the main one being the fact that it's mandatory for online multiplayer access in most PlayStation 4 games, with the exception of free-to-play games.

In addition to this, PlayStation Plus also enables users access to a host of free downloadable games, a lot of discounts, as well as the option to store game saves in the cloud.

For the time being, things are going very well for Sony's gaming arm, with the company's Game and Network Service divisions also reporting good performance for the recently concluded quarter.
