The PlayStation 4 has broken past the 18.5 million mark in sold through consoles on a worldwide level, according to data from Sony, but the device has also managed to dominate the United Kingdom market for the entirety of 2014, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday, two of the busiest periods of the year.

Sony quotes data from GfK Chart-Track, which also shows that the platform has managed to outsell the Xbox One from Microsoft when November and December are taken into account as one tracked period and it also dominated the last week of 2014.

MCV says that the PlayStation 4 has managed to have 1 million sold consoles in the United Kingdom in early September of last year, while the rival device needed until late November to reach the same exact milestone.

Sony is emphasizing the performance of its device in order to show that its strategy, which consisted of keeping the price steady and launching solid games and new apps, was the right one to use.

Microsoft has tried to cut the price of the Xbox One in order to make it more attractive to potential customers, and it also introduced some pretty impressive bundles for Black Friday.

Both consoles need innovative strategies in 2015

The race between the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One is fascinating to watch, but the most important statistic shows that sales for both devices are much higher than those for the Xbox 360 and the PS3 were at the same time during their life cycles.

But for the coming year, both Sony and Microsoft need to find new ways to promote their devices in order to make sure that the positive momentum is kept.

At the same time, they need to try and increase the number of video games that fans of each console pick up, mainly because the software industry has not been performing as well as hardware in the past 12-month period.

Rumors have suggested that both Sony and Microsoft have already planned to make price cuts in the coming period and that they have high-profile game bundles ready for the most important shopping period of the year.
