PlayOnLinux, a software that uses Wine (Wine is not an emulator) and that allows users to easily install and use numerous games and apps designed to run with Microsoft Windows, has been updated to version 4.2.5 and comes with a few very important improvements.

PlayOnLinux serves the same purpose as Wine, although it uses a much friendlier interface and sometimes it's able to run games and applications that don't work with Wine. The entire application is based on Wine, but it's a little bit more than a simple frontend.

One of the reasons PlayOnLinux is popular is the fact that it has such a simple and intuitive interface. It's certainly a lot easier to work with than the regular Wine settings and it's especially useful for users who have just migrated from Windows.

What the devs are saying about it

“PlayOnLinux is a piece of software which allows you to easily install and use numerous games and apps designed to run with Microsoft Windows. Few games are compatible with GNU/Linux at the moment and it certainly is a factor preventing the migration to this system. PlayOnLinux brings a cost-free, accessible and efficient solution to this problem,” say the developers.

The main advantage provided by the software, besides the ability to run Windows apps and games, is the fact that you don't need to have a Windows license. Also, PlayOnLinux is completely free and uses Bash and Python, which makes it very easy for developers to improve the software.

A new version is usually important

PlayOnLinux doesn't receive as many updates as Wine and that's why users have learned to pay close attention to new releases for this application. The developers usually make a new version available only when they have some important changes to make and that seems to be the case just now.

According to the changelog, compatibility with wxpython 3.0 has been implemented, the application is now compatible with Mac OS 10.10, POL_Config_Win16 has been added to check if the host can run win16 programs, the “Install” component button is now disabled until a component is selected, POL_Wine_InstallFonts will now preserve the current directory, reading/writing values containing “=” symbol in configuration files has been fixed, and the application is now compatible with Debian 8.

A complete list of new features and changes can be found in the official changelog, which is inside the source archive or on GitHub. You can download PlayOnLinux 4.2.5 right now from Softpedia. This is a binary file, so users should have an easy time installing it.
