PlayStation 4 owners will be able to adorn their consoles with some brand new swag soon, as Sony announced the debut of Project SkyLight, a series of limited edition faceplates meant to enable gamers to personalize their home consoles.

Granted, there are already people doing bang-up paint jobs for home consoles, and you can always get yourself some neat customized decals to plaster all over your console any day of the week, and for less money, but it's nice to see some official effort being made in this direction.

Although doing this after 20 years of PlayStation existence and one year after the release of its latest home console might be interpreted as lazy as best, or a shrewd calculation meant to eke out some of the misgivings of the system with treats that are few and far between, the truth of the matter remains that Sony is actually doing this, and, best of all, it's doing it before Microsoft.

The new initiative, dubbed Project SkyLight, will let users personalize their PlayStation 4 home consoles, starting with two limited edition faceplate designs, featuring art from LittleBigPlanet 3 and The Order: 1886.

The Limited Edition Project SkyLight faceplates are available on the Sony Store, going for $25 / €20, for a limited time only, so, in the words of Iron Maiden, be quick or be left without one, or however that song went.

A lot of exciting announcements

The neat feature was introduced at the PlayStation Experience event this weekend in Las Vegas, where Sony revealed a bunch of exciting stuff, including new video game announcements and a ton of new gameplay videos.

2015 will surely prove an auspicious year for the PlayStation family, and the option to customize the appearance of your PlayStation 4 is just one small fragment of Sony's loadout for the year.

The faceplates will be created in very small quantities, and Sony intends to launch new designs "in the near future," as the company states on the PlayStation Blog. In addition to this, Sony also mentioned that it was planning on adding some other, yet unknown fun enhancements to go together with the Project SkyLight personalization initiative.

In addition to this, the Japanese hardware and software giant also released a short video showing exactly how to remove and replace your PlayStation 4 faceplate without running into any trouble, which you can watch below.

But Sony, what about being able to browse files and maybe watch a movie from a USB stick?
