The odd marine creature was caught on camera by photographer Barry Bland, who spotted it in the Mediterranean

Not too long ago, a photographer named Barry Bland crossed paths with a fairly odd marine creature while exploring the Mediterranean. Luckily for us, he had his camera with him and snapped a few photos of it.

The creature, featured in the photo next to this article and the one below, is a jellyfish. However, it looks less like an aquatic animal and more like a floating fried egg. One with a perfectly yellow yolk, to be more precise.

As detailed by Daily Mail, this species of fried egg-like jellyfish is known to the scientific community as cotylorhiza tuberculata. The marine creatures populate not just the Mediterranean, but the Aegean and Adriatic Seas as well.

Like other animals of their kind, cotylorhiza tuberculata sting whenever they feel threatened. The good news is that their venom is not strong enough to cause people to develop serious health trouble.

Apparently, photographer Barry Bland became fascinated with them quite a while ago, when he chanced to see a photo of such an aquatic creature in a National Geographic calendar.

Hence, the next time he set out to explore the Mediterranean, he made sure to keep an eye open for one. Judging by the photos he managed to snap, it's safe to say his efforts more than paid off.
