The NPD Group has just revealed its sales figures for the month of May for the US region, thus confirming that the PS4 has once again dominated the Xbox One in terms of consoles and that The Witcher 3 is the clear winner when it comes to video games.

While the NPD Group offers retail sales data only for the territory of the US, it usually provides a pretty good barometer about the success of a certain game or console for much of the Western world. As such, winning a month, two, or more is a priority for big hardware and software makers.

After the month of April saw Mortal Kombat X and the Xbox One dominate, the May sales figures have just been revealed and paint a pretty different picture.

The PS4 has once again dominated the Xbox One

In terms of hardware, the PS4 is once again top dog, despite continued bundles and offers from Microsoft for its own Xbox One.

Even so, Microsoft is quick to highlight, via VG247, that the sales figures are up by 81% over May of 2014, while the activity of Xbox Live users also increased by 20%.

The Witcher 3 beats Mortal Kombat X or GTA 5

On the video game side, NPD data shows that The Witcher 3, one of the big releases of the month of May, is the best-selling software piece. Even if the title launched on May 19, it still managed to trump other video games that were on sale throughout the whole month.

The second most popular title is Mortal Kombat X, followed by Grand Theft Auto 5 and Minecraft on consoles like PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, or Xbox One. Nintendo's Wii U exclusive Splatoon resides at the number five spot, followed by Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, NBA 2K15, FIFA 15, MLG 15: The Show, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U & 3DS.
