Sony confirms that its PlayStation 4 console reached a brand new milestone in terms of sales, moving over 18.5 million units worldwide as of January 4, 2015, and over 81.8 million games both in terms of retail and digital data.

The PS4 launched worldwide back in November of 2013, first rolling out in just a few countries and then slowly expanding to more and more territories all around the world. The device quickly proved to be a best seller, trumping its main rival, the Xbox One, for quite some time, while establishing new sales records.

The PS4 has now sold over 18.5 million units

Now, Sony has released a statement confirming that its PlayStation 4 sold over 18.5 million units worldwide as of January 4. What's more, as a further testament to the popularity of the console, the Japanese company confirms that over 4.1 million units were sold globally during the holiday season, which for Sony means between November 23 and January 3.

"We are absolutely delighted that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as their console of choice throughout this holiday season," said Andrew House, president and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.

"We will continue to reinforce and deliver additional value on PS4 as the best place to play, by bringing even more exciting content and by enriching our wide array of service offerings."

Plenty of games and lots of Plus subscriptions have also been sold

More data was also shared by the corporation, with Sony bragging about its over 10.9 million users with active PlayStation Plus memberships as of January 2, 2015.

The sale of games is also really strong, as over 81.8 million copies were sold either via retail stores or the digital PlayStation Store as of January 4. During the holiday season, more than 17.8 million games were acquired by PS4 users from all around the world.

While Sony's results are certainly quite impressive, it's going to be interesting to see if Microsoft also puts out a statement with sales figures for its own Xbox One console. In recent times, the corporation has only released financial figures that grouped up both the Xbox One and the old Xbox 360 in terms of sales figures.
