Barry Kauler, the famous Puppy Linux creator, was proud to announce a few hours ago, February 26, the immediate availability for download of his Quirky 7.0 GNU/Linux operating system, dubbed April. This version comes as a major upgrade for the previous release, Quirky 6.2, and includes a number of new and attractive features, such as gorgeous desktop powered by JWM (Joe’s Window Manager), as well as some of the latest Linux technologies.

According to the official release notes, Quirky 7.0 is now built using the powerful T2 build system, includes Linux kernel 3.17.8, and contains packages optimized only for 32-bit (i686) CPU architectures. Of course, the most important feature of Quirky 7.0 is that it is now distributed as a Live CD ISO image, besides the USB and USFS XZ-compressed images suitable for USB flash drives.

“I created Puppy Linux back in 2003, but there was never a toolchain for compiling Puppy completely from source. Instead, Puppy is built from binary packages of another distro, plus PET packages compiled natively. We did use the T2 system right back at Puppy v2, T2 being a system to compile from source, however it only compiled a big chunk of the packages, not all. We still used manual compiling to create many PET packages,” says Barry Kauler.

Quirky 7.0 brings a wide range of system improvements, updates and new utilities, fixes for some of the most annoying bugs, support for building packages for both Puppy Linux and Quirky with the T2 build system, as well as new and improved applications. The distribution also switched from IceWM to the JWM (Joe’s Window Manager) graphical environment, which includes some beautiful artwork.
