At 47 mm tall without the fan, it is very short indeed

It doesn't take that much to define a CPU cooler as a low profile model, but it's one thing to place the heatsink horizontally and another to go out of your way to make a model truly compact. It makes the difference between a micro-ATX and a mini-ITX system.

Looking at the new CPU cooler from Phanteks, it becomes apparent that the company knows the difference very well indeed.

Called PHTC12LS, the low profile CPU cooler measures just 47 mm in height, or 74 mm if you add the fan. That means it is compatible with 99-mm small form factor cases, which often house HTPCs.

It's true that the height is a bit greater than for certain other coolers, especially those whose fans effectively sink into the heatsink.

But it's also true that coolers like this one have the benefit of a greater heat dissipation area, and by extension, a better cooling capability. Evident in how the product can withstand up to 200 degrees Celsius / 392 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Phanteks PHTC12LS

First off, the cooler is compatible with both Intel central processing units and APUs/CPUs from Advanced Micro Devices.

That means that if you get an FM2/FM2+ or LGA 1150 system, the cooler will work. It will also be able to cross over if you switch from an AMD-based HTPC to an Intel one. We have the Solisku Bracket to thank for this one.

Not that home-theater PCs are the only ones that can benefit. Micro gaming computers are another lucrative market, as are nettops.

There are six C-type nickel plated heatpipes taking heat away from the CPU, although they don't make direct contact with it. A nickel-plated base plate is used for that.

Furthermore, the aluminum fin array uses slim fins with what Phanteks describes as faster heat distribution thanks to their stacked arrangement. Phanteks' P.A.T.S technology further maximizes heat dissipation as well.

Finally, the PH-F120MP PWM High Static Pressure fan has seven blades and doesn't necessarily need to be installed if it's a low-power nettop you're setting up, since the chips normally used in them have low enough TDPs that the heatsink and heatpipes alone can handle it.

Availability and pricing

Phanteks PHTC12LS will start shipping next month, December 2014, for $39.99 / €32.06 - €39.99 via most retailers. It may even become a normal part of future mini PC configurations and nettops from desktop makers, but it's not totally certain.
