Reach your desktop by simply looking at your webcam

The guys over at Microsoft are trying their best to deliver a Windows product that takes advantage of all the glories of IT evolution. Amongst others, it’s said that one of the new features lets you login through simple face detection and it comes under a friendly name: Windows Hello. Since the technology isn’t new on the market, you might be surprised to know that you can use face detection as a login method even on Windows 7 and 8.

It’s one of the features Microsoft is still working on, meaning you have to go through the hustle and bustle of setting up a different application for everything to properly work. There are other login alternatives as well, such as voice detection and fingerprint reader, but why not simply smile at your webcam to access the desktop?

Besides the software component, you need to make sure that you own a webcam, or at least that it’s properly working. Quality is no concern because the algorithm is based on sets of calculus and line positioning, color detection and a few more. Once the device is up and running, a simple search on the web retrieves various applications that can handle the detection and login operations.

Two powerful tools you can use

We took the liberty of testing and presenting a couple of programs to save you some time. The first is KeyLemon, which comprises a set of powerful tools with which you can fully configure the way you get past the login screen. This can mean both face and voice detection.

For a small price, you and any other individual that wants to login to a corresponding account can do so, with multiple profile slots to save. The application cleverly stores all of them and knows which is which. Thorough algorithms make sure face and voice are perfectly tweaked to minimize the risk of successful intrusions. What’s more, attempts are tracked and saved so you can view who tried to login without approval.

On the other hand, packed with the same potential, but less features, you’re literally free to use Rohos Face Logon Free. It skips you both the effort of payment and the time needed to setup credentials. Again, multiple profiles are saved, but not the same level of security is provided. However, it works just fine for personal and home environments, where you don’t work with sensible data.

Sure, modern technology tends to make us a bit lazier, but if properly used, projects or activities of all kinds are greatly enhanced. Truth be told, it’s only a shame not to use available technology to its fullest, especially since most computers and mobile devices are equipped with different, sophisticated tracking and detection methods, not only for a more comfortable lifestyle, but also for more safety. It’s now just a matter of time until Microsoft bundles all of them in a powerful, hopefully stable new operating system.
