After the announcement of the Linux 3.14.40 LTS kernel by Greg Kroah-Hartman, Jiri Slaby had the pleasure of informing us about the immediate availability of Linux kernel 3.12.42, an LTS (Long Term Support) release that brings important fixes and updated drivers.

Looking at the raw changelog, we can notice that Linux kernel 3.12.42 LTS fixes numerous issues with the ARM64 and ARM architectures, related to KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine). The previous version, 3.12.41 repaired various bugs in the ReiserFS, OCFS2, and Common Internet File System (CIFS) file systems, addresses a couple of sound issues, and improves the IPv4 and IPv6 networking protocols.

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.12.42 kernel. All users of the 3.12 kernel series must upgrade," says Jiri Slaby. "The updated 3.12.y git tree can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

Many drivers have been updated in Linux kernel 3.12.41 LTS

In addition to the changes brought by Linux kernel 3.12.42 LTS, the Linux 3.12.41 kernel updated a great amount of drivers, especially for USB, SCSI, Ethernet, Wireless, InfiniBand, ATA, Bluetooth, iiO, GPU, and TTY. Of course, several other core components of the Linux 3.12.41 kernel have been improved as well.

All users of the Linux 3.12 kernel series are urged to upgrade to the 3.12.42 release as soon as the packages appear on their Linux kernel-based operating systems. Alternatively, you can download Linux kernel 3.12.42 LTS right now from kernel.org or via Softpedia and compile it yourself.

We remind you that the current stable versions of the Linux kernel are 4.0.1 and 3.19.6, and the most advanced LTS (Long Term Support) release is Linux kernel 3.18.12. Other LTS versions of the Linux kernel include 3.10.76, 3.4.107, 3.2.68, and 2.6.32.65.

Update: Linux kernel 3.12.42 LTS was released on May 4 and we've modified the article to reflect changed brought by both 3.12.41 and 3.12.42 kernels.
