After yesterday's announcement for Linux 3.4.107 LTS kernel by Zefan Li, another kernel maintainer announced the immediate availability for download of a new maintenance release, this time for Linux kernel 3.19, which is not an LTS version.

Greg Kroah-Hartman was happy to announce today, April 20, that Linux 3.19.5 kernel is now live on the kernel.org website, along with new point releases for some Long Term Supported (LTS) Linux kernels, 3.10 and 3.14, for which we have separate articles on Softpedia if you're curious to see what's new.

According to the appended shortlog, Linux kernel 3.19.5 brings assorted improvements and bugfixes to several architectures, including x86, ARC, ARM, PowerPC, and SPARC. Additionally, it includes various improvements for the Btrfs, XFS, OCFS2, NFS, and CIFS file systems.

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.19.5 kernel. All users of the 3.19 kernel series must upgrade," says Greg Kroah-Hartman. "The updated 3.19.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.19.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary"

Numerous drivers have been updated and others added

Looking at the entire changelog for Linux 3.19.5 kernel, we can see that it is quite a small release. However, in addition to the changes mentioned above, numerous drivers have been updated and other added, all in order to support new hardware components to improve support for existing ones.

There are driver changes for GPU, including Intel i915 and Radeon, InfiniBand, DMA, Wireless, including ath9k and brcm80211, PCI, SCSI, TTY, iiO, USB, and Xen. All users to the 3.19 kernel series, which is currently used in many mainstream operating systems, including Ubuntu, Fedora, and Arch Linux, are urged to update as soon as possible.
