Willy Tarreau, the maintainer of the 2.6 kernel branch, announced a few minutes ago the immediate availability for download of the sixty-six maintenance release of Linux kernel 2.6.32 LTS.

According to the attached changelog, Linux kernel 2.6.32.66 LTS is quite a small maintenance release of the 2.6.32 kernel series, which is an LTS (Long Term Support) branch supported with security patches and updates for a few more years, as compared to normal kernel versions. The fact of the matter is that Linux 2.6 is the oldest long-term supported branch of the kernel.

Linux kernel 2.6.32.66 LTS is here to bring several improvements to the x86 architecture, a few updated drivers, especially for InfiniBand (IB), Serial, and SPI devices, fixes to the HFS+, ISOFS, and OCFS2 filesystems, several networking enhancements for both IPv6 and IPv4 protocols but also for Netfilter, RDS, RxRPC, Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP), and an Open Sound System (OSS) fix.

"I've just released Linux 2.6.32.66. The updated 2.6.32.y git tree can be found at http://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-2.6.32.y. The tree can be browsed on the gitweb interface http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git/log/?h=linux-2.6.32.y. Thanks to all reviewers, and to Greg for the final packaging," says Willy Tarreau.

All users of the 2.6 kernel series must update as soon as possible

As expected, all users of the Linux 2.6 kernel series are urged to upgrade to the 2.6.32.66 maintenance release as soon as the packages become available in the main software repositories of their GNU/Linux operating system. Distribution vendors and advanced users who know how to compile a kernel can download Linux kernel 2.6.32.66 LTS right now via Softpedia or from the kernel.org website.
