Publisher Square Enix and developer Dontnod have released a brand new video diary discussing upcoming adventure game Life Is Strange.

The developer diaries are meant to offer a behind-the-scenes look at the game's development process and to reveal more about the themes featured in it, and show players what they can expect to see and experience when the development process is completed.

The second entry in the three-part series, titled Butterfly Effect, details the protagonist's time-altering powers, showing how it's done and how the developers tried to make sure that everything is working fine within the game's context and framework, in order to provide gamers with a meaningful experience.

The video shows several instances of how time traveling is done, comparing the mechanics to the movie "Groundhog Day." Players will be able to rewind time and keep their knowledge of future events, using it in order to progress through the game and achieve the wanted outcome in various situations.

Life Is Strange is a graphic adventure played from a third-person perspective, enabling users to toy with timelines and explore the consequences of their actions.

A story about choice and consequence

The game will follow childhood friends Maxine and Chloe, as they embark on a journey to uncover the mystery behind the suspicious disappearance of a woman.

The gameplay revolves around making choices and seeing how they affect the story, and the developers have stated that there isn't necessarily a right or wrong way to do things, and that there isn't a definite answer to the situations you come across.

Dontnod has recently revealed that they are also working on Vampyr, a role-playing game taking place right after World War I, but for the time being, the details on that project are very scarce.

Life Is Strange, just like Dontnod's debut title, Remember Me, features a female protagonist, and the studio revealed that Square Enix was the only publisher who was okay with that and didn't ask them to change it to a male lead.

The game will be released in an episodic fashion, and the first installment is set to debut on January 30, headed to Windows PC, the Xbox 360 and Xbox One home entertainment systems from Microsoft, and the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 home consoles from Sony.
