14 DAY TRIAL // VirtualBox, a virtualization application that allows users to run and install operating systems inside other OSes has just received a small, but important maintenance update that brings, among other things, support for the latest Linux kernel 4.0.
VirtualBox is definitely one of the best applications of its kind and it's jam-packed with a ton of features. It's updated by Oracle on a constant basis and one of the most important features is the support for the latest Linux kernel. This is extremely important, even if there aren't any distros that have adopted this kernel just yet.
Only a couple of Release Candidates have been made available so far for Linux kernel 4.0 and it will take a while until operating systems adopt it. That means VirtualBox developers are looking to stay ahead of the curve, which is actually a great move from them.
Linux kernel 4.0 compatibility is still tested
The bug that was opened regarding the support for Linux kernel 4.0 has been kept open because this particular branch of the kernel is still under development and problems might still crop up before the final version arrives.
"VBox 4.3.24 contains the adaptions for Linux 4.0. However, I will keep this defect open until we can rule out any incompatibilities of VBox with Linux 4.0," wrote one of the application developers. A number of smaller problems have also been corrected, but nothing that is worth mentioning. This is still after all a maintenance release.
Some repositories might be quick to integrate this latest release, but the speed varies on the distribution. Users will find that the VirtualBox devs have already compiled some binaries for the most important platforms and they can be easily downloaded.
