If you've been keeping an eye on the news, you probably know that this year's September witnessed the debut of the first Formula E championship ever. The competition is ongoing, but by the looks of it, two raving drivers are already well worthy of a handshake and a pat on the back.

These two drivers are Brazil's Lucas di Grassi, who won the inaugural race held in Beijing, China, on September 13, and Britain's Sam Bird, who claimed victory in the second race that took place in Putraya, Malaysia, this Saturday, November 22.

Apparently, it was a fairly easy win

According to Business Green, Sam Bird first managed to secure the front position during lap four. Admittedly, he did have some competition on his hands, chiefly from Lucas di Grassi and Swiss racing driver Sebastien Buemi, but he eventually managed to finish first.

For those especially passionate about car racing, here is the final order: 1, Sam Bird; 2, Lucas di Grassi; 3, Sebastien Buemi; 4, Alain Prost; 5, Jerome d'Ambrosio; 6, Karun Chandok; 7, Oriol Servia; 8, António Maria de Mello Breyner Félix da Costa; 9, Jaime Alguersuari; 10, Christian Abt.

Plenty of races left to go

This first Formula E championship ever is scheduled to run September 2014 until June 2015. As detailed by the folks behind this initiative, drivers have another seven races to complete until the season officially ends.

Of the upcoming races, one is scheduled to take place in the city of Punta del Este in Uruguay on December 13. Another one will be held on January 10 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and a couple others will shortly follow in Long Beach and Miami, US.

Before the very last race set to take place in London, UK, on June 27, two other competitions will be held in Monte Carlo, Monaco, and Berlin, the capital city of Germany.

So, what's the deal with this Formula E championship?

This Formula E inaugural season, together with the others that are sure to follow it in the years to come, is expected to help make electric vehicles a wee more popular than they already are. The end goal is to fight climate change and global warming by encouraging folks to opt for greener cars.

As explained by the event's organizers, “The championship centers around three core values of Energy, Environment and Entertainment, and is a fusion of engineering, technology, sport, science, design, music and entertainment – all combining to drive the change towards an electric future.”

Furthermore, “The event is a vision for the future of the motor industry over the coming decades, serving as a framework for R&D [research and development] around the electric vehicle, accelerating general interest in these cars and promoting sustainability.”
