The phablet will be released in South Korea

As expected, South Korean company LG, world’s third major smartphone maker, has just introduced its first in-house manufactured chipset called NUCLUN.

Previously known as Odin, the chipset was thought to be packed in LG’s upcoming flagship smartphone, but it looks like the handset maker has other plans with its SoC (system-on-chip).

We reported yesterday about LG’s unannounced G3 Screen aka LG Liger, which was spotted in South Korea ahead of official release and in some benchmarks carrying the Odin (NUCLUN) chipset inside.

Well, it looks like the smartphone along with the said chipset have been made official by LG. The bad news for those who were expecting LG’s Odin chipset is that the smartphone announced today will only be available in South Korea, at least initially.

Dubbed LG G3 Screen, the Android handset will be available in South Korea exclusively via LG U+ carrier beginning this week.

Most of the specs underneath the G3 Screen’s chassis are similar with those leaked yesterday, but for those out of the loop, here is a quick rundown.

First of all, let’s see what’s all the fuss about LG’s in-house NUCLUN application processor (AP). According to LG, the NUCLUN features an 8-core architecture and LTE-A Cat.6 support (225Mbps download).

NUCLUN (pronounced NOO-klun) was designed using ARM big.LITTLE technology for better multi-tasking capabilities. The chipset accommodates four-cores 1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A15 and four 1.2GHz cores ARM Cortex-A7.

LG claims the number of performing cores at a given time can be adjusted based on how demanding a task is for maximum power or maximum energy savings.

Performance-wise, LG’s NUCLUN chipset doesn’t seem to be too far behind Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 SoC, which isn’t that impressive.

However, let’s not forget that the NUCLUN powers a mid-range Android smartphone, not a top-notch handset. LG G3 Screen sports a 5.9-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display that supports full HD (1080p) resolution.

In addition, the smartphone is equipped with a 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 128GB).

On the back, the G3 Screen boasts a 13-megapixel camera with autofocus, LED flash, OIS (optical image stabilization) and full HD (1080p) video recording.

The smartphone will ship with Android 4.4 KitKat operating system out of the box and will be available in both black and white colors.

It’s also worth mentioning that LG G3 Screen is powered by a high-capacity 3,000 mAh battery, which has yet to be rated by the manufacturer.
