Canonical had the pleasure of announcing the release of the Ubuntu 15.04 computer operating system, dubbed Vivid Vervet, a major version powered by Linux kernel 3.19 and some of the latest Linux technologies available.

Many of the official Ubuntu flavors have been released as well today, April 23, including Kubuntu 15.04, Xubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu MATE 15.04, Ubuntu GNOME 15.04, Ubuntu Studio 15.04, and Ubuntu Kylin 15.04.

Lubuntu 15.04 has also been made available for download to users worldwide and it has been declared as a general bugfix release, as the development team prepares to switch to the LXQt desktop environment.

This release is supported with security patches and software updates for only 9 months, until February 2016. Do not hesitate to check out in-depth Lubuntu 15.04 screenshot tour below if you just want to see what the distribution looks like and what applications it includes.

Here's what's new in Lubuntu 15.04

First of all, we should mention that Lubuntu 15.04 is still based on LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) and many of the LXDE core components have been updated to their latest versions in order to fix various issues from the previous release of the distro, Lubuntu 14.10.

Second of all, the Lubuntu 15.04 operating system comes now with updated artwork, which includes an updated theme, more beautiful icons, and an updated GTK+ infrastructure for better compatibility with Qt applications.

Among some of the default components of Lubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet), we can mention the PCManFM file manager, which provides GVFS and GIO support, LightDM and LightDM GTK Greeter as the default login screen, the Mozilla Firefox web browser, and the fast and extensible Openbox window manager.

Download Lubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) right now via Softpedia or directly from the project's website where an official announcement is still missing at the moment of writing this article.
