Video game publisher Paradox Interactive is announcing that it will launch Knights of Pen & Paper 2, a new entry in the quirky series of role-playing games with a unique twist, on May 14 of this year on the PC but also on iOS and on Android devices.

The title is built around the idea that gamers are controlling a series of characters that are engaged in their own tabletop fantasy RPG experience, with capable and ruthless dungeon masters trying to stop them in their tracks as they explore a unique world.

Knights of Pen & Paper 2 will make the move from 8-bit to 16-bit graphics but will keep its retro style and its ability to take players back in time to the moments when they enjoyed actual real-world Dungeons & Dragons action.

New types of gamers will be added to the game world, including the Goth and the Rocker, and they will be able to use classes like the thief or the wizard and inhabit races like elves and dwarves.

Knights of Pen & Paper 2 will introduce changes to the combat system, which is designed to be more dynamic, and the dungeons that gamers can explore are also generated by the game engine on the spot.

Players will need to get through an entirely new campaign which has more crafting options, more loot to collect and equip, and some powerful bosses to take down.

Knights of Pen & Paper 2 is an interesting addition to the role-playing genre

Paradox also promises that its new title will introduce more jokes based on both gaming and pop culture.

Fredrick Wester, the chief executive officer of Paradox Interactive, is quoted as saying, “When you allow people at your company to dress up in wizard robes and suits of armor, sometimes you wind up with games like Knights of Pen & Paper 2. We’re going to be showing off the game in person this week at GDC. I wanted to reveal it during the DICE conference, but nobody agreed with me.”

The first title was enjoyable and a lot of players appreciated both the inside jokes and the mechanics that it delivered, and it will be interesting to see whether the developers will be able to replicate its success with Knights of Pen & Paper 2.
