14 DAY TRIAL // The other day, word got out that R&B singer Chris Brown was the father of a 9-month-old baby girl. The mother is a former model named Nia, whom he hooked up a while back and, as per reports, they are still on very good terms, though not romantically involved anymore.
The problem with this was Chris’s model girlfriend Karrueche Tran, whom he started dating in 2011. Their relationship has had its ups and downs along the years, which meant there was a chance he hooked up with Nia while he and Tran were on a break.
But how did she handle the news that Chris was a father?
Karrueche is not ok with it, walks
The first theory when the rumor broke was that Karrueche had probably known about the baby all along, which meant that she too was involved in her life. After all, late last year, after their most serious fight and breakup, Chris did tell her that he loved her (on Twitter, no less) and she stepped out the next day wearing what looked very much like an engagement ring.
In other words, things had gotten very serious between them in the past several months, serious enough to make it possible for them to deal with the arrival of a baby by another woman, and not suffer as a couple.
However, it turns out Karrueche was as shocked as the rest of the world to hear that Chris had a baby with another woman.
Shortly after celebrity publication TMZ broke the news, she posted a very telling message on her Twitter feed, explaining that she’d broken up with Chris because she wanted no baby drama in her life.
Ironically, the initial report claimed that there was no drama to Chris’ situation with Nia, even though they had no legal arrangement as regards the child: they were simply raising it together, with him chipping in for expenses and being there when she needed him.
Chris and Karrueche, a very troubled romance from the start
Chris and Karrueche started dating sometime in 2011, but despite recent signs that they might be thinking of taking the relationship to the next level, they were never what you might call a perfect match.
For a very long time, Chris went back and forth between Karrueche and ex Rihanna, with the respective relationships overlapping many times. When Rihanna eventually decided she’d had enough with him and ended things for good, Chris went back to Karrueche, but they continued to fight and break up, and reconcile later.
Their relationship is best described as on-and-off, and it doesn’t seem like it was strong enough to withstand the shock of learning that Chris had fathered a baby by another woman, and kept it a secret from her.
