KDE has announced today, March 13, the immediate availability for download and update of KDE Frameworks 5.8.0, a collection of over 60 add-on libraries for the powerful Qt GUI (Graphical User Interface) toolkit. This release brings a great number of improvements over the previous version, KDE Frameworks 5.7.0, which was released on February 14, 2015.

According to the release notes, KDE Frameworks 5.8.0 introduces two new frameworks, KPeople, which offers complete access to all contacts, as well as to the people who hold them, and KXmlRpcClient, which provides interaction with the XML-RPC remote procedure call (RPC) protocol that uses XML to encode calls and HTTP as a transport mechanism.

“KDE today announces the release of KDE Frameworks 5.8.0. KDE Frameworks are 60 add-on libraries to Qt which provide a wide variety of commonly needed functionality in mature, peer reviewed and well tested libraries with friendly licensing terms,” was stated in the official announcement.

KDE Frameworks brings numerous performance improvements

While Qt 5.5 has not been released, KDE prepares its Frameworks project for the final version of Qt 5.5 by fixing a great number of build issues. Resources scoring service has been finalized in the KActivities framework, an issue with ZIP archives has been repaired in the KArchive framework, and the KCModule::setAuthAction function has been restored in KCMUtils.

Furthermore, support for Hidden key has been implemented in KPluginMetadata, the KDeclarative framework now exposes lists to QML with QJsonArray, handles non-default devicePixelRatios in images, exposes hasUrls in DeclarativeMimeData, and lets users configure how many horizontal lines are drawn. Additionally, the KDocTools can be compiled in Mac OS X using Homebrew, offers better styling of media objects in documentation, and can encode invalid characters in the paths used in XML DTDs.

Of course, many other frameworks received improvements, including Plasma framework, NetworkManagerQt, KDocTools, KGlobalAccel, NetworkManagerQt, KWindowSystem, KWidgetsAddons, KIconThemes, KImageFormats, KIO, KTextEditor, KNotifyConfig, KService, and KNotifications, so we recommend visiting the official release notes for more details.
