Kubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) promises to be one of the most interesting releases in the Ubuntu family, and it all has to do with the newest Plasma desktop. We now have a screenshot tour in place for the latest version of the OS.

The KDE project had been known until last year as KDE SC or better yet the KDE Software Compilation. The developers decided to split the project into three parts, KDE Plasma, KDE Applications, and KDE Frameworks. This enables devs to push updates out the door much more easily since they don't have to wait around for others to be ready as well.

Kubuntu 15.04 is the first edition of the distribution that makes use of the Plasma 5 branch and users will definitely notice the change. If you don't upgrade your system to the latest version of Kubuntu, you will be stuck with the previous iteration, from the Plasma 4 branch, which is no longer supported.

KDE is now next-gen

Users were complaining that KDE was stuck in the past, but its makers have understood that they need to move on, and now Kubuntu looks and feels like a modern operating system and it was all achieved in a very short amount of time.

"Kubuntu comes with KDE Applications 14.12 containing all your favourite apps from KDE. This is the 14.12.2 update with bugfixes and translation updates. Several applications have been ported to KDE Frameworks 5, but those which aren't should fit in seamlessly. Non-KDE applications include LibreOffice 4.4 and Firefox 37," reads the release notes.

Also, the Linux kernel used by the distro is 3.19.3, but it's safe to say that it's going to be upgraded pretty soon. You can download Kubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) from Softpedia, or you can upgrade your Kubuntu installation if you already have it.
