The new version comes with fixes and a new Linux kernel

Kubuntu 14.04.2 LTS (Trusty Tahr), a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu that uses the KDE desktop environment, has been released and is now available for download.

The Kubuntu LTS flavor is supported for a period of five years, just like the Ubuntu-based one and it will receive the same kind of important patches. In this case, it's a new point release that brings all the relevant security patches and a big upgrade for the Linux kernel, amongst other smaller things. As usual, no new features are implemented and users should now expect to find anything different about their desktop.

In fact, Kubuntu 14.04.2 LTS is still using the KDE SC 4.13 branch, which is no longer under active development. The operating system will continue to use it long after the new Plasma 5 desktop has been out, which makes this Kubuntu branch a little bit quirky.

A new kernel and no way to install the latest Plasma

There is no official word from the Kubuntu team (as of yet) about this particular release, but we can tell you that it comes with the same kernel implemented in Kubuntu 14.10.

Also, if you want to stick to the "old" KDE 4.13, that's OK and you will be safe to do that. If you feel a little bit more adventurous, and you want to get the new Plasma, the old PPAs seem to no longer work, at least for now. That might change in the future, but for now you can't get a taste of the new Plasma unless you try Kubuntu 15.04.

Check out the official announcement for more details about this release. You can download Kubuntu 14.04.2 LTS (Trusty Tahr) right now from Softpedia. This is the regenerated ISO that contains all of the new fixes. If you already have the system installed, just update it regularly.
