Jake Gyllenhaal is keeping very busy these days: in between working in film, he’s also doing theater appearances. Right now, after a short stint on Broadway, he’s preparing for an even shorter stint in a musical - and he’s also promoting “Southpaw,” the summer release that sees him play boxing champ Billy Hope.

The other day, Jake stopped by Ellen DeGeneres as part of the ongoing media tour. Videos from his appearance are included below, specifically one in which he jokes about his first-date tradition of taking girls to meet his mother (to which Taylor Swift hinted on “All Too Well”) and another in which he talks about his training for “Southpaw.”

Also, he is single for the time being.

Jake also did a bit for charity, jumping rope and taking questions for 30 seconds because Ellen promised she would donate money to his favorite charity.

One thing that stands out with Jake, aside from his intensity and versatility on camera, is how down to earth he comes across. Rumor has it that he’s one of the nicest guys in Hollywood, and you can certainly feel that watching this interview: he’s humbled by praise and amused by the loud cheering from the female audience, and he’s also very funny.

Enjoy!
